TWO MEN HAVE been arrested following the recovery of two assault rifles and a large quantity of drugs by gardaí during searchers in Dublin this morning.

The first man, aged in his 50s, was arrested by gardaí following the discovery of an estimated €772,000 worth of cannabis, the two large weapons and 135 rounds of ammunition at a residence in north Dublin.

A second man, aged in his 30s, was arrested after a follow-up search at a different location in the county led to the seizure of a further €5,000 in weed. One single round of ammunition was found at the premises.

Forensic teams are yet to conduct analysis on the drugs seized during the operation.  Both men are detained at garda stations under drug trafficking laws.

Assistant Commissioner for the Dublin Metropolitan Region Paul Cleary has commended the team’s work in this operation, hailing it as a “major success”.

Describing the weapons as “military-style assault rifles”, he said that their presence in connection with the seizure of cannabis “is a reminder of the connection between the sale and supply of cannabis and potential organised crime groups”.

“The sight of such assault rifles may cause concern, but I want to reassure the public that this is not a routine occurrence and thanks to the vigilance of our gardaí, these firearms were recovered from organised criminals,” he said.
